Here is a quick toy snake you and your child can make on a rainy day. It took me and this 5-year-old child half an hour to felt and film the making of these colorful snakes.
There is nothing much to this craft: take a piece of bike chain (see How to Take Apart a Bike Chain), wrap a bunch of wool roving around it, wet it down with soapy water, and squeeze/roll it until the wool fibers fuse into a solid snake body. The reticulated bike chain gives the pet snake a realistic feel. So if you’re looking for a “safe reptile” for your child, start with this harmless toy snake. There’s no feeding, no cleanup, and no fear to overcome.
Watch this video to see how easy it is to make.
the biggest issue i have with this lovely project is that if a tea-cup chihuahua gets a hold of it…it’s a gonner!
Which–the chihuahua or the snake?
Marty,
Patrick would really love this project. I’ll have to go into town and see if I can purchase a pile of old bike parts. From your other crafts it would seem there is no limit to what can be done with them!
Oh, no need to purchase bike parts. Just ask them if you can go through their dumpster.
